A Brief History of the Flite eFoil
If you are
looking to buy an electric hydrofoil, you should consider the Flite eFoil. This is an electric
hydrofoil that lets you fly above the water, and it is controlled by a remote
control in your hand. The CEO and founder of the Flite model is called David
Trewern. He grew up the small Australian surf town Merimbula and started to
surf and windsurf with just 10 years He later on switched to kitesurfing where
he broke the GPS speed world record of 44.9 knots in the year 2015. Through
kitesurfing, David also got introduced to hydrofoils.
For days
without wind David Trewern was thinking about a hydrofoil with electric motor
and worked on up to twenty prototypes with his friends. His main goal was to
come up with the first electric hydrofoil with the motor integrated into the
fuselage. He started the project for fun, but it later became a full time
startup to bring out the Flite Fliteboard.
Before developing
the Flite eFoil, David had already founded two successful companies that had hundreds
of employees at the end. However, according to him, the Fliteboard was the most
complex process. During the first months, the focus was on the engineering
process as well as hundreds of hours in front of the computer to define the
right setup. The foil, the board propulsion systems, battery as well as the
remote control were challenging hardware and software projects.
During the
development process, David realized that he needed more power than he expected
and at the same time, the weight had to be reduced. And of course, since the
Fliteboard will be used in seawater, all components had to be salt-water
resistant. He did not allow any compromises to develop a product that he would
not only purchase, but also queue up to purchase.
